Lambs are born in stables or other such humble circumstances. According to Luke's gospel, the angelic annunciation of the birth of the Savior of the world came not to important dignitaries or kings, but to shepherds tending their flocks in the middle of the night. Was there any significance to these shepherds other than being humble keepers of sheep?

Or was there a greater purpose to the angelic revelation specific to these shepherds? So, when the angels appeared to the shepherds, theirs was a message from God that the Great Shepherd had been born in Bethlehem!
