Metropolis Maria robot costume

The film version is different due to limitations of the practical special effects available at the time. I've just watched the special features of a 2 disc set of Metropolis put out by Madman here in Australia, and in the 'making of' documentary it mentions that the robot costume was made from "a new malleable wood material which had just appeared on the market. German actress, Brigitte Helm (1908-1996), was just 19 years old when she played the duel roles of 'Maria', and the 'false Maria robot' in Metropolis. Hey folks, I posted this on some other boards, and I thought I would throw it out here as well. Futura or Dark Maria or Maria the Robot OR simply the "machine man" is now so iconic people recognize it even if they have not seen the film. In the film version Rotwang proudly proclaims that Hel, Rotwang's former lover, is not dead but alive in the form of the automaton. The torso, back of the head, feet and lower legs we’re sculpted then vacu-formed.

Hel chose Fredersen over Rotwang, something for which Rotwang never forgave Fredersen. The material could be sawn, grated, filed and sanded."

This is the Madsudaya Maria robot that came out in the 90's. The Face was sculpted, molded then slush cast in resin. If you've seen the latest AFM, you've already seen her. The Maschinenmensch is a metallic automaton shaped like a woman. Last May I began making this costume. At the control of director Fritz Lang, she would also be the one to wear the Maschinenmensch costume in the film.
